SFPC hosts regular School Food Forums in partnership with Sacramento State University and their Student Food and Nutrition Club. This one day conference for school food professionals, CSUS students (future school food professionals) and community members offers Continuing Education Units to 200+ attendees in the training objective areas of: Farm to School; Local Procurement; Food Access; Plant Based Meals; School Gardens and Nutrition Education; Supply Chain Tracking and Transparency; School Wellness Policy Assessment; Garden to Cafeteria; and Food Waste amongst others.

In December 2019, Sacramento County passed it's first Environmental Justice element, mandated by SB 1000. SFPC worked closely with Sac County Public Health and the Office of Planning and Environmental review to develop and include robust food policies, laying the groundwork for County support of an equitable food system. These food policies mandate that Sacramento County Public Health create a countywide food system action plan, informed by a food system assessment. We are advocating and actively building the strategy, partnerships and people power necessary to ensure that the EJ element is implemented with the partnership, voices and priorities of historically marginalized communities, who are often most impacted by food insecurity and food apartheid.

A partnership with Sac County Public Health to deepen understanding of each level of the county food system with an emphasis on equity and racial justice. As part of our Environmental Justice Campaign, SFPC worked closely with Sac County Public Health and a wide range of community, nonprofit, and food system stakeholders to conduct this assessment from 2020 - 2022 informing a countywide food action plan that will guide decision making for a more equitable food system. For over 20 years, the International Garden of Many Colors (IGOMC) has served as a place of nourishment, health, and respite for over 40, mostly immigrant families that garden there. Since 2017, this North Sacramento refuge came under threat of displacement, as the City of Sacramento determined the garden to be unsafe, attempting to push gardeners to a nearby garden plot. Since then, the Sacramento Food Policy Council stepped in as an advocate to support the gardeners in maintaining access to this land, critical to their food sovereignty and security. Currently, SFPC holds a contract with the City of Sacramento to manage the IGOMC.
